Our Mission:
Educate, Engage, and Empower
Backfield in Motion is a non-profit organization that focuses on education through mastery of literacy and numeracy skills for at-risk youth that leads to a high school diploma, a foundation for higher education, and the on-job skills needed to enter the world of work, while using athletics as an incentive for academic improvement.
Our Core Values:
We believe that every student deserves an opportunity to be successful, regardless of their current environment; to be well-educated, prepared for the challenges of the real world, and treated with the love and respect they deserve.
We believe our students should be celebrated for their potential and the contribution to the quality of life they bring to everyone they meet. All students, even those in at-risk neighborhoods and non-traditional home situations, deserve the chance to be well-educated and empowered to meet the increased changes for success in an ever changing world.
We celebrate all individuals who give their time, knowledge, monetary donations, and their good work to help our students. We know that each contributor is unique with different facilities and resources, but we believe that individuals, foundations, and businesses share our belief that at-risk students should be provided a way to have access to the same kinds of opportunities that are available to those in more affluent neighborhoods.

Providing Wide Range of
Learning Experiences and Opportunities
Social and Emotional Learning
Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) activities are an integral part of our program that is in place to foster holistic development in students. These activities are designed to enhance self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making. By participating in SEL activities, students learn to manage their emotions more effectively, which helps them handle stress and build resilience.
S.T.E.A.M Activities
Our program integrates STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) activities into their programs to enrich students' learning experiences. These activities engage students in hands-on, interdisciplinary projects that promote critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving skills. By participating in STEAM activities, students gain a deeper understanding of academic concepts through practical applications, making learning more relevant and exciting.
Enriching Experiences
Backfield in Motion partners with local companies and organizations to provide students with enriching experiences that extend beyond the classroom. These collaborations bring diverse resources and opportunities to the program, exposing students to new environments and career pathways. Through these partnerships, students participate in field trips, workshops, and mentorship programs, gaining hands-on experience and insights into various professions.
Working Together To Find The Solution
The key elements of the BIM program are to increase the students’ reading and math proficiency, along with school attendance and improved disruptive classroom behaviors. Through our partnerships with Metro-Nashville Public Schools, the Tennessee Department of Education, the Nashville After Zone Alliance, Mars Petcare, Dollar General Literacy Foundation, The Boedecker Foundation, Care Foundation of America, Memorial Foundation, HCA, and several private donors, Backfield in Motion is able to provide multiple after school, summer enrichment, and ACT prep programs, along with an adult education program.
