1st and Ten...
1st and Ten is the entry-level program
which Backfield in Motion
incorporates
to serve boys from 10 to 12 years of age.
Following school each day, our participants alternate between receiving
tutoring and mentoring in a classroom setting, where, during one-on-one
sessions, our licensed teachers and certified reading specialists
place special emphasis on:
- Reading Comprehension
- Mathematics
- Critical Thinking
- Homework completion
- Or Practicing Team Sports, dependent on the season
Academically, the direct interaction between student and mentor
helps to ensure successful results in developing strong academic skills
and building self-confidence and self-esteem.
Athletically, our youth program coordinators help students 'grow' not
only
their physical skills, but also good sportsmanship.
As they practice, the coordinators seize every opportunity to open a
dialogue that addresses how to
deal with success, failure and frustration.
In addition, field trips to sporting events and other special
activities help teach proper public behavior support instruction
in life skills.
4th and One...
Designed to retain graduating 1st and Ten participants in the Backfield in Motion
family, our 4th and One program continues the character-building process.
Students from 13 to 18 years of age are taught the skills required to
become confident leaders. Backfield in Motion sessions feature
continued tutoring/mentoring, group discussions, life-skills training,
field trips plus preparation for graduating high school, including
ACT/SAT prep, college preparation, job training and career paths.
During these
conferences, program participants witness leadership in action through
exposure to successful men and women who lead positive, productive lives,
showing them that work, finances, spiritual needs and family values can
be kept in
healthy balance.
Through the incorporation of timely topics, 4th and One participants
gain a deeper understanding of the importance of making wise choices,
learn the dynamics of leadership and find out how to incorporate making education and
social responsibility top priorities now and in their future.
Saturday (School) Enrichment...
The Saturday (School) Enrichment program is an extension of the
weekly tutorial program. It runs through the school year and is
coordinated by certified teachers with classes on-site at Montgomery Bell Academy.
Participants are assessed beforehand to determine their academic levels,
and they are placed in classes accordingly.
Once a student is accepted into Saturday School, his day begins with
van transportation to Montgomery Bell where he is served a
nutritious breakfast.
Afterwards, students rotate through classes with emphasis placed on interactive, hands-on
learning in reading and language arts and math. The day concludes with
instruction and fun academic game challenges.
The goal of our Saturday (School) Enrichment program is to strengthen academic skills and problem-solving
abilities and to enhance character development, and we have seen, and
continue to witness, many
positive outcomes.
VIP...
The VIP Program targets our current participants who exhibit a high
degree of academic and leadership potential by exposing them to
experiences that will facilitate their future success.
Elite students from the 1st and Ten and 4th and One programs are
selected by academic achievement and an individual's
commitment to self-improvement to participate in VIP.
These young men engage in a wide range of activities including field
trips, social events and workshops, and they are often introduced to
role models and leaders with whom they might build positive
relationships that will help to shape their futures.
Extra Point Academy (Summer)...
Extra Point Academy (EPA) is a month-long summer academic enrichment
programs that takes place at Montgomery Bell Academy in Nashville.
Typically coordinated during the month of June, Extra Point Academy
builds reading, writing and math competency. EPA also incorporates
computer literacy, science/engineering awareness, life skills training
and character development.
This custom-tailored academic curriculum is balanced with an on-site
athletic component, as well.
In addition, educational and recreational field trips are coordinated
every Friday.
Leadership Camp (Summer)...
Each summer, Backfield in Motion
transports the most promising of our boys
to a host college for a jam-packed week of academics, athletics and
character-building.
Our students live in actual dorm rooms and attend college classes.
They also receive instruction in character-building and social skills,
and they participate in football and weight training sessions
coordinated by college coaches and athletes.
Numerous recreational and educational field trips help to make this camp
unique and exciting, especially for those who have never before attended
any type of camp or have never been exposed to life on a college campus.
